Cookbook Recipes
Title: Red Devil's Food Cake
Author: Ethel Gates
Ingredients: 2 1/2 c Cake Flour (sift, then measure)
1 3/4 tsp Baking Soda
1/2 tsp Salt
3 square Unsweetened Chocolate, melted and cooled
2/3 c Shortening
1 3/4 c Sugar
2 Eggs
1 1/2 c Milk
1 tsp Vanilla
Method: Sift dry ingredients 3 times. Cream shortening and slowly add sugar, then eggs, beating well after each. Add chocolate. Beat well. Add dry ingredients, alternately with milk and vanilla. Beat well. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.
Comments: WHEN ALVIN AND SUE LIVED IN OUR UPSTAIRS WITH US, WE HAD A SATURDAY NIGHT RITUAL. SUE AND I WOULD GET OUR KIDS BATHED AND IN THEIR P.J.'S SO THAT WE COULD WATCH "YOUR HIT PARADE" AND HAVE THIS RED DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE WITH SEAFOAM ICING OR SUE'S FRESH COCONUT CAKE. THE RED DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE WAS ALSO A FAVORITE OF LOUIS' WHEN THE SHARPNACKS CAME TO VISIT.
